Study title: Eye spy: looking for early signs of eye changes in diabetes
Principal investigator: Westall, Carol
Study description: Some patients with diabetes develop a condition called diabetic retinopathy. Diabetic retinopathy affects vision, and is difficult to treat once it starts. Our team is looking for new ways to identify changes in the eye before diabetic retinopathy begins. We are using a brand new instrument that allows us to see individual cells in the eye. We are also using several other tools to test eye function. Looking at structure and function together, we hope to solve the puzzle of diabetic retinopathy.
Recruitment information: We are looking for subjects from ages 12-45 to participate. Individuals WITH and WITHOUT Type 1 Diabetes are welcome. Participation involves one 3-hour session involving various non-invasive vision tests. Participants should be comfortable with getting eye drops (dilation), which may cause blurry vision for 2-3 hours. Participants will be compensated for their time. This is also an opportunity for high school students to earn community service hours. Please note: Research4kids is a site for recruiting volunteers for clinical research studies. We only respond to correspondence relating to our studies. We ask individuals seeking employment or volunteer opportunities at SickKids to please refer to our Careers and Volunteering page.
