Study title: Characterizing the Impact of Chemotherapy in the Developing Brain (The Quality of Life Study)
Principal investigator: Nieman, Brian J.
Study description: There has been a huge success in being able to cure cancers and more than 90% of children with leukemia will be cured. Unfortunately, about half of these cancer survivors experience difficulties concentrating, learning, and remembering things that make it difficult to do well in school for example. We think that these difficulties are the result of changes in the brain caused by chemotherapy treatment. The goal of the Quality of Life study is to investigate: How does chemotherapy treatment change brain development and how is this linked to difficulties in thinking, feeling, and quality of life?
Recruitment information: Study participation involves: 1. Neuropsychological assessment: We will ask you to do various tasks to measure reaction time, problem solving ability, attention and behaviour. 2. Questionnaires: We will ask you to fill out questionnaires about yourself. In addition, we will ask your parent and teacher to complete some forms describing your behaviour in different situations. 3. Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI): We will ask you to go in the MRI scanner so that we can take pictures of your brain. In total, the testing would last approximately 4-5 hours (one-time visit only). Survivor Group (Kids/teens treated for acute lymphoblastic leukemia) You may be eligible to participate if you: - were diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia when you were between the ages of 1 and 10 years old - were treated with chemotherapy only - are currently between 8 to 18 years old - have been off ALL treatment for at least 2 years - do not have metal in your body - do not have orthodontic braces (wires are OK) Compensation: $50 plus a picture of the brain and Volunteer hours. The study will take about 4-5 hours to complete. Please contact us to verify your eligibility.
