Learning more about children with hepatitis B in North America
Study description:
The Hepatitis B Research Network is conducting this study at approximately seven locations in the United States and Canada. The Hospital for Sick Children, Toronto, is one of the sites. The National Institute of Health (NIH) in the United States is providing the funding for this study. Approximately 500 children (ages 6 months to less than 18 years) will be enrolled in this study. We hope to enroll as many as 80 children at SickKids. We hope that the information collected in this study may help identify the best way to diagnose or treat Hepatitis B. If you choose to participate, a physical examination and a detailed medical history of your child will be taken. We will find much of this information in the medical records at the hospital. At the same time that a clinical blood test is collected, we will collect some extra blood from your child. The samples will be labelled and stored by a coded number. Your name and your child’s name and medical record number are never used on the information collected. The collection of additional blood for research is optional. Most research visits will also include a brief Quality of Life survey to be completed by you and/or your child. This study lasts for up to six years, but your length of participation depends on age at the time of enrollment. There are three visits in the first year and one annual visit in the remaining years. Your participation is entirely voluntary and your child will receive the same level of care whether you decide to participate or not. You are also free to drop out of the study at any time.
